Legacy & The golden rule

February has a way of turning our hearts toward what matters most.
Here in Calgary, more snow is in the forecast. Sidewalks get cleared, only to be covered again. Days are slowly getting longer, but winter isn’t in a hurry––it still gives us time to slow down, notice, and reflect.
With the quiet stretch of winter along with Valentine’s Day and Family Day, our hearts naturally turn toward what really matters: love, connection, and the life we’re quietly building.
Legacy is more than what we leave behind.
It’s the lasting impact of how we live––our choices, our values, and the ways we care for and influence others. It’s how we show up every day.
Perhaps it’s the milestone birthday I'm stepping into this year that gives me more pause and reflection. Not in a dramatic way—just more aware of the quiet threads of life that have shaped me, and becoming more intentional about what truly matters.
A few years ago, Darrel and I were in Texas and happened upon the Dr Pepper Museum. We had no idea this favourite childhood soda was birthed in Waco! While wandering through, I came across a display about W. W. "Foots" Clements and the simple way he chose to lead: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you (Matthew 7:12).
He followed the Golden Rule.

It was around the same time our own company was beginning to take shape, which may be why it resonated so deeply—and why I took a photo. Here was a man building a legacy steadily and faithfully, one small, consistent choice at a time. The kind of care, integrity, and attention to how we treat one another that we hoped would define not just our business, but our life.
For me, it’s the small, unseen choices that matter most—staying true to my values, stewarding well what I’ve been given, and knowing that I am part of something bigger than just myself.
It’s less about big statements and more about small, faithful choices.
Less about recognition and more about responsibility.
Less about what we accumulate and more about how we love.
If you take one thing from this, let it be this:
You matter.
Every brave choice you make.
Every step of obedience.
Every act of kindness.
Every moment you show up.
All of it is shaping you.
Your life, your work, your words, your presence — they all matter.
Legacy isn’t something we save for someday. We can always make the decision to "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Every small, faithful action matters.
At FAM, we think of legacy as a shared story — yours, ours, the books that inspire, and the people we encounter along the way. Every choice adds to that story, and I’m grateful we get to grow it together. 🫶🏼
